Boats Of The Stars

David Geffen is a major entertainment producer. His “boat” is 435 feet long and 8,000 square feet of space. For $200,000,000, you get your own basketball court, swimming pool, movie theater, and a submarine – all for a $13 million/year maintenance bill.

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, also has a $200 million dollar “floater” with 2 helipads, swimming pool, and a submarine for 10 to escape. But, how about some real celebrities?

  • Johnny Depp has an historic classic. Jack Sparrow looked long and hard to find this vintage gentleman’s yacht, the Vajoliroja, at 156 feet of 1930’s’ class and elegance. It has masts, smokestacks, and wood everywhere – a robber baron’s float. Richly and plushly over-decorated inside, it hosts guests on charter runs where its crew serves gourmet meals on vintage table service.
  • Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas was launched in 2010. Sleek and silver, it has an infinity pool that turns into a helipad. There’s room for 12 guests and the crew of 26, including a marine mechanic school graduate. Steve’s master suite is fully equipped with a study, private deck, and Jacuzzi. Word is that you can rent this boat for $1.3 million a week.
  • Eric Claption’s Va Bene is a 157-ft. Steel-hulled. She accommodates 12 visitors in 6 cabins and a crew of 13. Its interior is soft, cool neutrals against which Clapton displays his extensive art collection. The furniture is clustered into conversation and game groupings. In fact, he has refreshed the interior by getting rid of the previously overdone decor – replacing the gold fixtures with chrome. Clapton spends a good deal of time on the yacht in the Caribbean.

Flat bottom, deep-V, tunnel hull – there are all sorts of boats out there. Some are made of steel, aluminum, wood, fiberglass, or some composite. They all need fixing sooner or later for leaks, breaks, scratches, or wear and tear. The elements can be hard on them. But, it takes an individual with specialized marine service training, to repair them. The newer the boat the more skill it takes to fix and finish.
