Land Rover’s New Technology: Discovery Vision
Land Rover’s new GPS-style technology, Discovery Vision, debuts at the New York International Auto Show in April 2014. Discovery Vision is the first of several technological concepts Land Rover is offering to improve the driving experience for Land Rover drivers.
The technology directs a camera to scan the terrain in front of the Land Rover, then a computer recreates that landscape in digital form on a projection on the lower left portion of the windshield. On other vehicles, that spot on the windshield would be blocked by the sloping hood, but on the Land Rover, the “Transparent Bonnet” provides the space to make this possible, offering to improve the driving experience for Land Rover drivers.
The Land Rover is already an excellent vehicle for rough adventures like “crossing the Serengeti or finding the source of the Nile,” according to Road & Track, so Discovery Vision will probably be used for more urban and mundane tasks like fitting into a tough parking spot and helping an inexperienced driver maneuver out of a tricky situation.
According to the Land Rover website, the Discovery Vision feature is just the beginning. The company plans to offer awesome technology “typified by cutting-edge features that include smart glass, laser headlights, Terrain Response™ and Remote Control Drive.”
