5 Reasons Why You Should Attend the Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival

This marks the second year that the Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival will transform Langhorne, PA’s Core Creek Park into a live-action on-the-water celebration of culture, competition, and community.   Taking place on Saturday, September 24, this local event is free to spectators!

To help you see the incredible time you’re in for if you go, ATC came up with five reasons you should attend the Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival.

1. Taking Part in Olympic-Level Excitement

Dragon boat competitionsDragon boat competitions have been around since the first Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece. If you couldn’t go to Rio, why not celebrate the spirit of the games right here in Bucks County?

People-powered watercrafts with 22 crew members on board paddling stroke by stroke, watching a dragon boat race is a truly exhilarating experience!

2. Getting a Glimpse into Chinese Culture

Today, dragon boat competitions are primarily held in China and Taiwan during a special celebration called Duanwu Festival that marks the start of the summer solstice.

The Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival gives you the opportunity to see and take part in something you wouldn’t unless you were halfway around the world! How often does that happen?

With race heats running throughout the day on the lake and cultural presentations taking place around the park, attending the Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival is an awesome, immersive way to expand your cultural horizons while staying close to home.

3. A Dynamite Weather Day in Core Creek Park

The summer heat will be behind us and autumn’s chilly air not yet totally set in. The end of September is a glorious time to be outside at Core Creek Park.

If you haven’t been to Core Creek before, you’re in for a treat. Hiking trails, picnic-approved grasses, playground, and the breathtaking focal point of the tranquil lake: It’s the perfect backdrop for the Bucks County Dragon Boat Fest to take place.

4. Your Instagram Opportunities Will Be Nearly Endless

Intricately carved watercraft traditionally made of teak wood, dragon boats are known for their elaborate Chinese dragon heads that lead the bow and shimmering, vibrantly colored tails at the stern. Add the contrast of the water and bright clear skies, and your inner photographer will be having a field day.

5. Supporting the BCDBA in Paddling Out Hunger

Proceeds from the Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival go toward the Bucks County Dragon Boat Association’s (BCDBA) ongoing initiative to “paddle out hunger” in the Delaware Valley.

Money raised from participating vendors and food donations collected will benefit BCDBA’s charity partner, the Bucks County Housing Group, that runs several food pantries in the Doylestown region. Your participation and support helps Bucks County residents on multiple levels!

Don’t Miss This Unique and Exciting Festival

The opportunity to enjoy a beautiful day, cheer on dedicated athletes and neighbors, learn something new and support the community: The Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival is sure to be an epic local event that will make a big impact!
