The Automotive and Hi-Performance Technology program will prepare you for a hi-performance engine technician career. Real-World Experience
In the Automotive and Hi-Performance Technology program, students will be able to acquire technical knowledge and expertise, learning how hi-performance vehicles run and what kinds of repairs may be needed when they aren’t running at full strength.
Learn the tools of the trade from experienced and knowledgeable instructors in the classroom. The second half of the day will be dedicated to working on engines and equipment, applying the strategies and concepts learned in the classroom.
Diagnosis and reconditioning of engine issues is a major block of the coursework and practical hands-on time in the lab area. Work will be done on engine blocks, cylinder heads, camshafts, pistons, and crankshafts.
Studying Hi-Performance Vehicle Equipment
When learning from ASE-certified technicians, whether in the classroom or the lab, you’ll be learning from instructors who have real-world experience and are knowledgeable when it comes to hi-performance engines. The chassis and engine dynamometers are two of the tools used to measure engine power. The chassis dynamometer is able to measure the entire powertrain’s performance.
The car will be positioned so the drive wheels are on the rollers of the dynamometer, and the gas pedal will be pushed down after the brakes are disengaged. The dynamometer is able to measure power levels generated by the engine, thanks to the computer hooked up to the equipment.
Building or optimizing engines to be raced on tracks or speedways across the country is one way to put your Hi-Performance Technology program degree to use.
Becoming an Experienced Technician
Like with any field of study, it can take months, even years, to perfect certain aspects of your job. The program at ATC is designed to be completed in about 80 weeks, as you learn all about engine principles and how to maximize engine performance. Upon graduation, you’ll be ready for a range of entry-level positions, from machinist to engine builder to performance technician.
It’s possible to take your interest and passion for fast-paced vehicles to the next level. There are some cars on the road today capable of pushing 600 or even 700 horsepower, and these cars will need engine tune-ups and repairs as time moves on—and you can be at the forefront.
