Boat Painting

ATC Boat Painting Checklist

Since summer is quickly approaching, now is a great time to give your boat a new coat of paint. A fresh paint job gives your boat an updated appearance. And if you don’t want to spend money on hiring someone to paint your boat, you can complete this project yourself.

If you’re looking to give your boat a new coat of paint but are having trouble finding out how to start, take a look at Automotive Training Center’s (ATC’s) Boat Painting Checklist below to learn the proper way to complete the job.

Choose the Right Paint

There are many different paint options for your boat, all depending on what style you’re going for and the purpose of the paint. Your new paint depends on the type that’s already on your boat and how long it stays in the water. If you’re looking for color, alkyd oil-based paints and acrylic-based paints are a great option. Hard-bottom paints are extremely durable, and different types of high-performance bottom paints can help minimize water friction for boats that travel at higher speeds. You can also choose chemical paints that can prevent unwanted growth on the bottom of your boat. Deciding on the purpose of your paint should narrow down your options. Keep in mind that if you’re going to apply a different type of paint, you’ll have to sand off the current paint beforehand.

Painting Prep

Before you apply your paint, you need to make sure your boat is ready to be painted. Apply a solvent to the surface of your boat to remove any waxy residue. Once applied, you’re ready to sand the boat. If you’re applying a second layer of the same paint, just make sure the surface is smooth. But if you’re applying a different type of paint, as previously stated, sand all your current paint off.

Repair if Needed

Before applying your paint, check your boat to make sure that it’s in tip-top shape. Be sure to fill any holes, cracks, or dents with epoxy so the entire surface is smooth.

Prime Time

It’s best to add a couple of coats of primer to create a solid foundation for your paint. Start with one layer of primer then sand the surface again after it dries for a consistently smooth surface. Then apply another coat of primer before painting.

Paint Your Boat

After the second coat of primer has dried, it’s time to paint your boat. Use a roller and paint evenly. Let the paint sit for a couple of hours before applying a second layer. You may have to add a third layer to make sure your paint job is smooth. Applying a new coat of paint to your boat at home isn’t that difficult. Follow the steps on the ATC Boat Painting Checklist and you’ll have a beautiful boat at the end.
