How Long is Automotive Training?

Automotive TrainingWhen enrolled in the full-time Automotive Technology program, students will work to receive technical knowledge and experience needed to become an entry level automotive technician at a dealership or service center. Our ASE-certified technicians teach an ASE-based curriculum.

The program is structured as a 2-year endeavor, with 64 total weeks of classroom work and hands-on training. Taking it hour-by-hour, that means 1,920 total hours in the classroom and lab. A part-time schedule is available for students, too, which covers 84 weeks and takes 1,344 hours to complete. Task repetition is decreased in the part-time classes, which results in the hour difference.

To receive a diploma, students will partake in numerous courses to gain a full understanding of vehicles and their operation. Courses include:

  • Brakes
  • Engine Repair
  • Electrical Systems
  • Engine Performance
  • Computer Controls & Electronic Diagnostics

Automotive Training: More Than Just the Car

While students will be learning about vehicles in the classroom and working on them in the hands-on portion of things, automotive training is about more than just the car. Learning life skills and what it takes to be a technician is a major part of the process, too.

Becoming a technician involves:

Attention to detail. Time in the shop will be spent on dynamometers, alignment systems, and above-ground electronic lifts. When using certain machinery and tools, it’s important to focus and pay close attention to detail.

People skills. ATC graduates go on to enjoy successful careers due in part to their people skills. To become a business owner, manager, or service writer, you must be able to explain complex vehicle details in simple terms to customers and potentially manage other employees.
